New York City Announces Water Conservation Grants
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) recently announced the Water Conservation and Reuse Grant Pilot Program, for property owners who install water-conserving plumbing upgrades, such as low-flow fixtures or water reuse systems, in commercial, industrial, or multi-family buildings in New York City. Water reuse systems, also known as water recycling systems, are designed to allow the safe and efficient reuse of rainwater, black water, and gray water. The goal of this reimbursement grant program is to reduce city-wide water consumption by 20 million gallons per day, with the added benefit of an equivalent reduction of flow into the City’s sewer system.
Eligible recipients include institutional, residential, and commercial/industrial customers who receive a bill directly from the NYCDEP for their own water use, and have at least one year of water use data (new construction projects without current water use data would be eligible for reimbursement for installation of water reuse systems only). Eligible projects must conserve at least 1 million gallons of water per year, which comes to about 2,740 gallons per day.
