The Former MediGen of New York, West Babylon, NY

Athenica was contracted by Nobis Engineering to conduct Biohazard/Medical Waste Inspection Services as well as an Asbestos and Lead Inspection at the former MediGen Site in West Babylon NY. In supporting the efforts of Suffolk County for the Brownfield redevelopment of the MediGen site. The US EPA contracted Nobis Engineering and Athenica to investigate the site.

Our overall scope was to identify the type and location of the biohazard/medical waste, asbestos and lead containing materials. Additionally, Athenica provided a cost estimate for required remediation. Athenica’s certified Industrial Hygienist, along with a team of asbestos, lead, and HazMat inspectors performed the inspection and submitted our report to Nobis.

Athenica provided consulting services to develop a commercial building in Flatlands, New York. Athenica completed all environmental-related work from A to Z for this project, including a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment, a remedial investigation, the closure of an underground storage tank, and the preparation of associated reports for the NYC Mayor’s Office of Environmental Remediation’s approval.

This project exemplified economic revitalization of the Flatlands neighborhood. Prior to redevelopment, the site was utilized as a dry cleaner and a commercial retail store. Upon completion of the redevelopment, the new building will house a fitness center.

Environmental Site Assessment

Client: 37-10 Crescent St. – Owner, LLC

Prior to the demolition of an 18,000-square foot warehouse at the site, the building was occupied by a bowling alley called “Crescent Lanes” in the mid 1960’s. The site is currently being developed with a mixed-use building which will be named “The Lanes” after the former bowling alley. Athenica has completed all environmental-related investigations at this property including a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment and a remedial investigation, and submitted associated reports for the NYC Mayor’s Office of Environmental Remediation’s approval.

With Athenica’s expedited support, the client managed to meet the 421-a tax abatement deadline and, by completing the project successfully through Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP), was also able to qualify for two Brownfield Incentive Grants. Upon completion of the mixed-use building at the end of 2016, the building will house 57 rental apartments and a ground floor commercial space.
